Wins from my clients aren’t like, you win a case, you lose a case. It’s really, did I successfully accomplish what we needed to tackle? And a lot of times when I’m brought in, clients reach out to me because they need to structure a complex deal. I have clients that will come to me and say, “Well, we’re a nonprofit, but we want to start a for-profit. And how do we do this? And how do we make sure that we’re following the rules?” Or, “We want to build a massive sports facility. How do we get it paid for? And what’s the economics of it and how do we structure it?”
And so a success for me and for any client is if I can helpfully, efficiently, get them a structure that works for them and allows them to get comfort in the work they’re doing and their finances. And typically for me, I might start out being brought in as a client to do some sort of business structuring or what have you. And usually I ended up staying on to handle all sorts of other legal needs as we went through. Because I spend a lot of time being sort of what we call an outside general counsel. Where I handle things for clients that started out as, “Oh, help me start finance.” And then, “Oh, I got to fire someone.” Or, “I have to hire someone.” Or, “I need to get a loan.” Or, “I need to do a lease.” And so I start out with success and then I just keep going to help clients with their everyday needs.
